E-Plus Global Sdn Bhd, organisers of Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships – Malaysia, have received a record-breaking 3,500 participants registered for the race.
Recognised as the world’s biggest duathlon among the Powerman series, the race was certified by the 2016 Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Largest Participation in a Duathlon Championships’. The event will return to Putrajaya on the weekend of 4 & 5 March 2017, with courses passing by some of the city’s world-class architecture including Putra Perdana (the Prime Minister’s Office), Putra Mosque, a picturesque man-made lake, and the Palace of Justice.
“The surge in registration clearly reflects the proliferation of duathlons in Malaysia and the region, as well as the confidence in our race management skills,” says Iskandar Shahril, Managing Director of E-Plus Entertainment Productions Singapore and Thailand, and the Race Director of Powerman Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Among the elite competitors is World No.3 and returning champion Thomas Bruins from The Netherlands, who is also the winner of the inaugural Powerman Thailand and Powerman Indonesia held in January and February 2017 respectively. Bruins anticipates a highly competitive race this year, stating, “A greater number of participants, the weather, and my fitness are my primary concerns building up to the race. I will ensure that I am prepared both mentally and physically.”
Other elite competitors include Japan’s World No.5 Airi Sawada in the Women’s race, and Jason Loh, Malaysia’s local hero and multi-sports athlete, who will be contending for the Individual Short category title.
The 2017 edition introduces ‘PowerKIDS’, a grassroots programme initiated by the company to nurture talented young multi-sport athletes. Catering for children aged 5-12, the programme has received a positive reception with over 200 children registered to date.
